Zero-Turn Mowers

Zero-turn mowers get their name from a special drive that allows them to turn with an effective radius of zero. This means you can simply ride down your lawn in a straight line, turn, and you’ll meet up exactly with the cutting deck for another pass. No cutting gaps, and no rough edges in need of touching up. These mowers are also fast, often with 5-8 mph cutting speeds, and the fastest models can bump it up to 13 mph (though cutting effectiveness doesn’t translate to the highest speeds).

Zero-turn mowers aren’t brush clearing machines. If you’ve got grass above six inches, you’ll need something more specialized. Zero-turn mowers are best deployed on lawns and grass that sees regularly maintenance. Although zero-turn mowers are fast and powerful, easily able to maneuver around obstacles in a yard, they can’t avoid what you can’t see hidden beneath too-tall grass.

Lawn Tractors

Lawn tractors are a great solution for yards too big for walk-behind mowers, and they offer some extra utility while they’re at it. They’re priced reasonably compared to zero-turn mowers and produce reliable results. While they don’t offer some of the benefits of a zero-turn like quick turns and fast speeds, their steering wheel controls are easy to operate. This means some more maneuvering to get that professional look for your lawn, but they bring in some extra utility in the form of towing power. Unfortunately, like zero-turn mowers, lawn tractors aren’t suited for overgrown undergrowth and grass over six inches in height.

Pull Mowers

Pull mowers are actually implements that are pulled behind a tractor or other tow vehicle. Many pull mowers are better equipped to deal with grass over six inches tall and even non-grass vegetation. Usually these mowers have a set of spinning blades that are powered either by PTO or an independent engine located on top of the mowing deck. The speed and maneuverability will depend on the vehicle towing them, but they’re usually less maneuverable than a zero turn or lawn tractor. Price can vary greatly, but if you have a large plot of overgrown property, this could be your best bet.

Collection vs. Mulching

Clipping collection systems are preferred by professional landscapers on account of the clean, manicured surface they leave behind. This is great for landscaping that has its own irrigation systems that can keep the lawn hydrated. However, if you’re not necessarily interested in a clean mowing surface, a mulching blade is a great option. A mulching blade will shred clippings and deposit them on the lawn as you continue mowing. This insulates turf from heat and sunlight while also getting composted back into the lawn, ensuring the recycling of important nutrients.
