Even the best lawn mower in the world can’t do much for a lawn with bad turf. Luckily, renovating your turf is relatively easy with the right tools. Simply follow these tips from Magnum Power, and you’ll be mowing the lawn of your dreams in no time.

Low Sunlight

While some grasses need less sunlight than others, even those grasses need at least a little sunlight. You may need to trim or prune nearby plants to help your lawn get the sunlight it needs. If necessary, you may need to replace certain patches with a different ground cover altogether.

Bald Patches

Dig up any bald patches you find, level the soil, and add some compost. Once you’ve planted the new grass seed, be sure to give it some light ground cover and keep the area moist for 2-4 weeks. If you are using sod, cut out a section to fit the area and water it until it takes root.

Eliminating Crabgrass

While crabgrass and other invasive grasses tend to die off during the winter, they can still create dead patches and even soil erosion in your lawn. That’s why you should deal with it early if possible. If you choose to use herbicide, make sure that it will only harm the invasive grass. Mowing the offending grass using a higher cut after applying the herbicide can help prevent new growth. We recommend a 3 ½ inch cut.

Grubs

Not only do grubs and other insects eat grass roots, but they also tend to attract animals looking for an easy meal, such as moles, raccoons, and birds. These animals can further damage your lawn. When it comes to dealing with an infestation, you need to consider the species, soil condition, and grass type, so don’t be afraid to seek out lawn care experts. If you choose to use pesticides, follow any local laws and regulations. They are usually best applied at the end of the growing season to avoid damaging the turf.

Thin and Patchy Grass

You can’t grow a good lawn without good soil. A soil test kit will tell you your soil’s pH balance, as well as any chemicals that might be missing. These kits are relatively cheap and will help you determine which steps you need to take in order to improve your soil quality.
