Watch for Nice Weather

Winter isn’t everyone’s favorite time of year, but some days are better than others. Take advantage of the nice ones to perform various maintenance tasks when you can.

Debris Removal

Keeping your lawn clear of debris is one of the most important winter maintenance tasks you can take on. Walk around your property on those nice days looking for leaves, branches, pine needles, or anything else that can keep your lawn from the sunlight and fresh air it needs to survive. Rake or blow away any buildup and remove heavy items to keep them from leaving patches of dead grass.

Less Foot Traffic

Lawns are more fragile in the winter, which means walking all over it is a no-go. Try to avoid walking the same path on your lawn too often to avoid excess damage to one area of the grass. Try to stick to your sidewalks and driveways where you can.

Aeration

It can help to aerate your lawn, particularly if there’s been a serious frost recently. These can keep fresh air from reaching the soil, which is damaging for your lawn. Try to remove any ice buildup and aerate when possible to keep cold temperatures or lack of air from harming the grass.

Preparing for the Cold

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. In this case, that means taking time to tie splints around small tree trunks and tying branches together on your trees to strengthen them. That way it’s less likely that wind, precipitation, or other winter hazards will knock over small trees and knock down branches from larger ones. If there are any branches that you suspect are susceptible to cold damage, remove them beforehand, and when the snow comes try to brush it off smaller branches.

We hope these tips help you keep your lawn fresh and healthy this winter season!
