Regularly changing your lawn mowers oil can help your engine last for years! However, it can be a real hassle having to load up your mower and drive it to the nearest service center. If you’re interested in learning to complete your mower’s oil changes yourself, be sure to read through our helpful instructions below.

Getting Started

To ensure you have a quick and easy oil change, you’ll want to start by running your lawn mower’s engine for a few seconds to heat up your engine oil. Once the engine is nice and warm, you’ll want to shut off your mower and remove your spark plug before placing it up onto a set of blocks. Once your mower is situated up on the blocks, take a moment to locate the drain plug and place an empty container underneath it. This receptacle will catch and hold the old oil until it can be properly disposed of and will need to have a wide opening to catch any unexpected spills or drips.

Changin the Oil and Filter

Now that everything is in place, you’ll want to put on your gloves and use a wrench to quickly remove the drain plug and allow the oil to spill into the container below. This will take a few moments, and may require you to tilt and cajole your mower a bit to be sure it’s drained completely. While you wait, you can once again use your wrench to unscrew the bolt holding your old filter in place and remove it. However, before you insert your new clean filter, be sure to use a cloth and a bit of fresh oil to clean your gasket. Once this is done, you can reinsert your drain plug, and refill your engine with new oil. As you’re pouring your oil, be sure to stop every once in a while to check your dipstick and make sure you aren’t overfilling your mower.
