Get Your Lawn Mower Ready

There are a few key projects that will get your lawn mower in optimal shape. It's best to do these when you first take your lawn mower out of storage, but they are still beneficial to do any time of year. Better late than never!

The lawn mower maintenance tasks include:

  • removing debris from your mower's undercarriage
  • ensuring the blade is sharp, since dull blades can damage the grass and won't be as effective
  • replacing the blade when it's time (you can keep a sharp blade on hand to use as comparison)
  • giving the model a thorough inspection to see if you can spot any issues that need addressing
  • taking the model to a service department when needed (remember that small problems left unaddressed can snowball into more costly repairs)

If you own a riding mower, there are a few extra steps including:

  • filling up the fuel tank
  • changing out the old oil, air filter, and spark plugs (if you didn't do this before you put your equipment in storage)

Get Your Lawn Ready

The winter months (and even cold spring months) can damage your yard. Before you start consistently mowing your lawn, you will want to boost its health.

If you notice any bare patches, plant new seeds. Then water each day until it grows enough to be cut. Wait to do the first lawn mowing until the new grass is at the same height as the rest of the yard or until it becomes two inches high.

After the first lawn mowing, fertilize the grass. This provides valuable nutrients, which lead to growth. If your yard tends to get overrun with pesky insects, stock up on products that help prevent and attack those issues.

Do Your First Spring Lawn Mowing

Once you have prepared your yard and your mower, you are ready for your first lawn mowing of the spring. Start by letting your mower warm up in the sun for an hour or so. This will result in a much easier start-up experience.

While your lawn mower gets ready, you will want to take this time to clear away any debris. If it's been some time since the last time you mowed your lawn, there may be a collection to gather up. Fallen branches, kicked-up rocks, and other obstacles can cause expensive damage to your mower's undercarriage, so it's important to get them out of the way. Plus, a layer of debris will interfere with your yard's ability to absorb nutrient-rich products that you will later apply.

As you mow your grass, try to remove about 1/3 of the grass blade. Then, mow every five days for the first six weeks of spring. Using this approach will help prevent overgrowth, which can result in future lawn mowing stunting the root.
